Some Amazing Facts about Infidelity

Why people cheat on their partner is a much more complex issue than what you may think. The reasons why men and women are unfaithful are different and can at times defy logic. Here are a few amazing facts about infidelity. These are based on studies done by professors in universities like Cornell, Rutgers and other organizations.

1. Contrary to what one may believe, most men (55%) who had affairs were happy in their marriage. Men cited sexual motivations for their indiscretions, and were less likely to fall in love with women they were having the extra marital affair with.

On the other hand only a little more than 1/3 rd of the women who had extra marital affairs were happy with their marriage and were looking to fill an emotional void in their relationship.

2. Due to the rising trend of extra marital affairs you may think that infidelity should be the leading cause of divorce, but that is not so, as reasons like incompatibility and non communication are cited much more than infidelity as the cause of a divorce.

3. The American Association for Marriage and Family therapy suggest that 25% of men had sex outside of marriage when compared to women who were at 15%.

4. The level of education has direct bearing on the likely hood of one being prone to having affairs. Studies have shown that college educated (13%) are less likely to have affairs than high school graduates (19%) and high school dropouts (21%).

5. Women who earned much less than their husbands were much less likely to indulge in extra marital affairs, most probably because of their dependency on their spouse’s income.

Men on the other hand are much more likely to cheat on their wives if they were dependent on their spouse’s income.

6. Genes could be to blame for infidelity; recent studies are showing that people who have a genetic variation of DRD4 gene (7R+) are more likely to commit infidelity than those who didn’t have this variation.

As you can see the reasons behind infidelity are varied. They include physical reasons, emotional reasons, financial reasons and even genetics. So one should not jump to conclusions when confronted with this problem. The best solution is to communicate with your partner and seek professional marital counseling.
