How to Diffuse Fights in Your Marriage

No matter if you have been married for a year or for 50 years the one constant that you will find among married couples is that they will have arguments or fights from time to time. It is natural for two people who live under the same roof to have differences. The key to a happy marriage lies in how each partner behaves during and after the fight.
Here are a few things you can do to help reduce the frequency and intensity of fights and arguments in your marriage:
•    If an argument gets too heated, then it is a good idea for one of you to step out of the room and just calm yourself down. It is easy to say nasty things when you are upset and you cannot unsay them. Most of the times you don’t mean it anyways so it’s better to take a break and talk again when you are a little settled.
•    Dial down your ego; if you are the one who has made a mistake then it’s important to own up to it and admits that you were wrong and that you tell your partner that you understand why they are upset especially if they are touchy about the subject. Doing this will in most cases stop the fight from escalating.
•    Inject some humor; try to say something funny to get a point across to your partner about something that ticked you off instead of shouting, this will not only have a bigger impact on them understanding that they did something wrong but also help nip the fight in the bud.
•    Connecting physically may help you both reduce the impact of the fight especially when further discussion is only muddying the water. Just a caress or just holding each other may help you both calm down.
Fights and arguments should just not be left to fester or else they will slowly poison your relationship by making it bitter to the point that you cannot stand each other let alone talk. It takes a lot of effort and patience to make a marriage work, just ask any happily married couple.
